This Diploma will be your introduction to the full spectrum of game art and design. From visual design fundamentals to illustration, game design conception and introductory development processes. You will graduate with the necessary technical skills and exposure to game development to walk into an entry level Game Designer role or continue your studies into the Bachelor.

COURSE OVERVIEW

WHAT TO EXPECT

Careers in Information Technology and Design have evolved significantly in the past decade to include new and emerging fields and specialisations that reflect the digital world we now live in. The emergence of Game Development as a highly significant and growing industry requires the expertise of several well established skills sets namely, game programming, game design and game art. The Diploma of Game Design and Development is specific to the development of game artists and designers and specific to the computer games sector which includes online, mobile and console platforms for electronic games.

Students studying this diploma will be introduced to the full spectrum of game art and design from visual design fundamentals including visual communication and illustration to game design conception and introductory game development processes.

Game Design for computer games requires a high level of technical skill development. In this diploma, students will be introduced to the technical tools and 3D construction techniques that are integral to the collaborative story construction that creative technology products require.

At the completion of the diploma, students will have the necessary technical skills and exposure to game development processes to enable entrepreneurial endeavours in game development or provide a clear pathway and scholarly techniques for further study and skills development.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Demonstrate an awareness of the distinction between ethical and unethical game art practice and articulate the impact of the game art and design profession on in immediate game development teams, local and global communities.
  • Describe the game art and design profession in the contemporary global environment, recognising and reflecting on the historical, social, cultural, material and technological contexts of local and international practice.
  • Illustrate a knowledge of research principles, and technical skills required to evaluate game development problems anticipating user behaviour and preferences.

Year 12 with ATAR 50 or equivalent OR speak to a Course and Career Advisor for special entry.

If you do not meet the ATAR requirements

Demonstrated ability to undertake study at this level:

  • Relevant work experience, and/or other formal, informal or non-formal study attempted and/or completed, written submission to demonstrate reasonable prospects of success OR
  • Design portfolio (6-10 pieces of original creative work)

Full admissions criteria

  • Australian Year 12 or equivalent; and
  • Academic IELTS 5.5 (no band less than 5.0) or equivalent.
  • International students seeking student visas must comply with regulations from the Department of Home Affairs.

Billy Blue Bachelor Degree courses are eligible for FEE HELP (Australian students only). FEE-HELP is Australian Government’s loan scheme for higher education degree courses. It can assist you in paying for all, or part of, your course fees. Repayments commence via the tax system once your income rises above a minimum threshold.
