28 November 2019

"My studies helped me with thinking outside the box, seeing things from a different perspective. Also, it helped me with knowing the composition and lighting thus making the photo more aesthetically pleasing.”

Congratulations to Film & Video Design student, Chuong Phan, for winning the T2 2019 Frame+Work competition! Discover how Chuong created his award-winning photo and how Billy Blue assisted him to do this.

Can you describe the photo you submitted for the competition?

The photo is an optical illusion that makes you feel that the guy inside the building is sitting on the middle of the street, but just because of the light on his phone makes it seem like it.

What was your inspiration for the piece?

It was on Instagram, someone also using the same trick as mine to make a man inside a building holding hands with a woman on the outside.

How do you feel your studies impacted your submission? Did you use what you’ve learnt in class?

My studies helped me with thinking outside the box and seeing things from a different perspective. Also, it helped me with knowing the composition and lighting thus making the photo more aesthetically pleasing.

What inspires you?

The decisive moment of Henri Cartier-Bresson inspires me taking and capturing moments that provoke emotion.

What are you passionate about and what keeps you driven?

All of the masters from the street photography genre help me stay passionate and have driven me to reach the same standard.

How do you feel Billy Blue has allowed you to keep that passion alive?

All of the lecturers fully support my decisions or my way of thinking, even though my genre is an unusual one.

What is the best part about studying at Billy Blue?

Everyone is very supportive and helpful. There is no wrong, just another way of doing things.

How did you feel when you found out you won?

I felt winning this competition is a boost to my confidence!
